Finding the Right Bible Translation
When it comes to reading the Bible, finding the right translation is crucial. For many of us, the New International Version (NIV) holds a nostalgic value, especially the 1984 edition. It’s what we grew up with, memorizing verses and learning stories. However, translations like the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) and the New Living Translation (NLT) also have their merits. The NLT, with its sixth-grade reading level, is especially approachable, making it easier for newcomers to engage with Scripture.
The Importance of Starting with the Gospels
If you're new to Bible reading, starting with the Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—can be incredibly beneficial. These books provide a direct look at Jesus' life and teachings. For example, the Book of Mark is straightforward and action-packed, ideal for those who appreciate getting straight to the point. On the other hand, John focuses on love, offering a different perspective on Jesus' ministry.

Utilizing Devotions or Bible Reading Plans
Bible reading plans are invaluable tools for structuring your devotional time. Here are a few we recommend:
Bible in One Year: Created by Nikki and Pippa Gumbel, this plan includes daily readings and insightful devotionals, making it both educational and spiritually enriching.
Life Journal: Developed by Wayne Cordeiro, this plan guides you through the New Testament twice and the Old Testament once in a year. It’s an excellent way to grasp the overarching narrative of the Bible.
She Reads Truth: This plan offers beautifully designed booklets with graphs, charts, and questions to deepen your understanding. They also have versions for men and children, making it a great option for families.
Engaging with Scripture through S.O.A.P. Journaling
One method we’ve found particularly effective for engaging with Scripture is S.O.A.P. journaling, which stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. Here’s how it works:
Scripture: Write down a verse that stands out to you.
Observation: Note what you observe about the verse.
Application: Reflect on how this verse applies to your life.
Prayer: Write a prayer based on your reflections.
This method helps you interact with the Bible in a more meaningful way, turning reading into a more active and reflective practice.
The Power of Consistency
Consistency is key when it comes to Bible reading. Setting aside dedicated time each day can help make this a habit. Whether it's reading a Proverb a day or a few verses each morning, starting small and gradually increasing your reading time can make a big difference.
Reading the Bible with Others
Reading the Bible with others can significantly enhance your understanding and engagement. This could be with your spouse, family, or a small group. Discussing what you’re learning can provide new insights and make the experience more enriching.

Teaching the Bible to Your Children
One of the most impactful things you can do as a parent is to read the Bible with your children. Teach them the stories and lessons from Scripture. This not only helps them learn but also strengthens your own understanding and commitment. Making the Bible Approachable
The Bible can be daunting due to its size and complexity, but breaking it down into manageable parts makes it more approachable. Use modern translations and tools like audio Bibles and devotionals to make the text more accessible.
Practical Tips for Engaging with Scripture Review:
Start with an approachable translation like NLT or NIV.
Use Bible reading plans that fit your lifestyle.
Incorporate methods like S.O.A.P. journaling.
Engage with others by discussing what you learn.
Utilize resources like podcasts and study materials.
Immersing Yourself in God's Word
Scripture encourages us to immerse ourselves in God’s word. Deuteronomy 11:18-20 (NLT) says, “So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.”
This passage highlights the importance of integrating the Bible into every aspect of our lives. Whether it’s through reading, listening to sermons, or engaging in worship, staying immersed in Scripture helps us grow spiritually.
